A MELBOURNE court today issued an arrest warrant for Wallabies winger Digby Ioane after the rugby union player failed to appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court to answer a charge of unlawful assault resulting from a pub brawl in March.

Mr Ioane, 27, had allegedly been drinking at a pub in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran when an incident took place involving his 30-year-old brother. Police also investigated Mr Ioane’s brother as a result of the incident, in which a Prahran man sustained leg injuries.

The bar room scuffle allegedly took place after a dispute about an iPhone at the Mount Erica Hotel escalated into a serious verbal altercation. Mr Ioane has been accused of being a fringe participant in the incident, however there is no suggestion that he had instigated the altercation.

Mr Ioane was not charged in the immediate aftermath of the pub brawl. He was summonsed to face court two months later while on tour in South Africa with the Queensland Reds. He returned from South Africa three days after the summons was issued with a knee injury.

The Wallabies winger, who has played thirty-five test matches for Australia, was attending a team training session at Carlton Football Club when the arrest warrant was issued. He was not participating in the session due to injuries sustained in the Wallabies 23-21 loss to the British and Irish Lions on Saturday night.

Mr Ioane’s arrest would make him one of five backs in doubt for the team’s must-win test next Saturday night. Berrick Barnes is also in doubt to play due to a head knock that may open the door for dual international Israel Folau to shift from the wing into the Wallabies back row.
